Report by the Chair, EIPTN on the 2018 Poitiers Annual Conference: objectives and achievements
– Description of the Poitiers Event: objectives and achievements
The EIPTN XIth Annual Conference took place in Poitiers, France, on 8-10 November 2018.
Prior to establishing the Program for the said conference, the Organizing Committee decided to establish the following three new and dynamic objectives for the EIPTN Annual Meeting (all reflected in the Program, fully available fromhttp://www.eiptn.eu/poitiers-2018/conference-program/):
– Priority throughout the Conference in IP Teaching with an interdisciplinary approach (lawyers, economists, business, science, etc)
– Dynamic openness of EIPTN to younger IP academics, and special clusters for them throughout the Conference (these academics are more “fragile” and less prepared to IP teaching)
– Adoption and immediate launch at the Poitiers Conference of an effective work program for EIPTN (which should NOT limit itself to an yearly annual conference) with possible substantive objectives and effective targets to be reached withinone year
The Poitiers Event fully reached these three objectives, yet without excluding traditional presentations made at the conference as this was the case in the past, along the following lines:
-Transdisciplinarity in IP Teaching including the Young Scholars’ Needs
-IP Teaching for Scientists and TTOs
-Exploiting Existing IP Digital Resources for Improving IP Teaching, in particular those of the EPO and EUIPO
-Promoting Incentives to Students in IP Teaching (including through quizzes, movies, students’ self-evaluation)
-The IP Teacher’s Development, including Young Academics’ Approach
-Thematic IP Teaching Debates
Janice Denoncourt, who remained co-Chair next to Laurent Manderieux as from December 2017 during the transition phase stepped down, in full collegiality and as planned, during the Poitiers Meeting, leaving Laurent Manderieux as sole Chair of EIPTN. Prof. Nicolas Binctin, host of the Poitiers Meeting, joined the Committee. Altogether 70 participants attended the Event, including non-speakers young Academics (mostly, but not exclusively from France) who came at their own expense and with no EIPTN reimbursement of travel expenses (reserved, as per standard practice, to speakers and chairs). Senior Poitiers University Academics (Dean /Vice Dean, Chair CECOJI) dedicated much time to the Event throughout.
The EPO and EUIPO were duly thanked on many occasions for their support to EIPTN, and their products duly presented on the first Conference day, showing large renewed interest.
Objectives for the future of EIPTN
The following substantive objectives were decided by the Committee, proposed by the Chair and approved by EIPTNparticipants:
– Establishment of a pluri-lingual and thematic Inventory of IP Courses and Syllabuses in the European Continent, with open rights, and without open rights
– Establishment of clusters and thematic working groups on IP Teaching (to report on their activity in our website, and in parallel sessions at the next Annual Meeting). The following clusters were defined, with a few names earmarked to promote them:
o teaching IP for Business and Entrepreneurship
o teaching IP and Technology
o teaching IP and Science
o teaching IP Strategies and Ethics
o teaching IP and Fundamental Rights
o teaching IP in Relation to Arts, Fashion, Culture and Creative Industries
– Establishment of one page Cv / profiles’ section on the website, with fields of expertise, and availability to lecture abroad or at domestic level
– Support upon request to Universities, in particular in the Eastern part of the European Continent, in developing IP Courses
– Exploiting Existing IP Digital Resources for Improving IP Teaching, in particular those of EUIPO and the EPO
– Establishment of a website Section dedicated to calls for paper (with disclaimers)
– Preparation of a Policy Declaration for IP Teaching in Europe
– Establishment of an Annual Prize for the best Presentation at the EIPTN Conference, with focus on Innovation in IP Teaching and on Young Teachers, possibly with the support of the EU /EUIPO
– Issuance of Certificates of Membership, including Working Group Memberships
– Preparation of the next Annual Conference that could be combined with another Conference that comprises a substantive agenda (e.g. On TTOs)
– Re-design of the Regular Newsletter
Call for interest in thematic group activities
As per the above Report, with regard to objectives for the future of EIPTN, we agreed on
– Establishment of clusters and thematic working groups on IP Teaching (to report on their activity in our website, and in parallel sessions at the next Annual Meeting). The following clusters were defined, with a few names earmarked to promote them:
o teaching IP for Business and Entrepreneurship
o teaching IP and Technology
o teaching IP and Science
